New car prices are rising in the US, sending many buyers to the used car lot. And it’s not just low-income earners or those with poor credit who cannot afford the new cars; a report by credit bureau Experian indicated that even customers with good to excellent credit are preferring used vehicles, as they accounted for more than half of used-car financing in 2019. While buying used can be a great option when you can’t afford a new car, it means that you’ll miss out on many of the latest technologies that new vehicles are coming out with. Thankfully, there are several aftermarket devices you can add to your old car to give it some of the capabilities you find in new models.

Car safety tech

Car safety technology has come a long way over the years. While comparing various new car options, you’ll come across features like forward collision warning (FCW), Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), all of which are designed to prevent accidents. While most of these advanced features can only be installed by the manufacturer during production, some have aftermarket options available. You can start by installing rearview cameras to improve your visibility out the back and make it easier to get into parking spots. Driver assistance systems such as blindspot detection systems, lane departure, and forward-collision warnings are also available, but they may force you to dig deep into your pockets since they require a variety of sensors and cameras to be mounted on the front, rear, and sides of the vehicle.

Modern infotainment systems

Entertainment is a huge part of owning and driving a car, especially if you spend a lot of time driving or you usually have kids on board. One thing that will take entertainment in your car to a whole new level is a modern head-unit. A head-unit comes with a touchscreen for easy control and is loaded with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, audio streaming, Bluetooth connectivity, and high-definition radio to give you more entertainment options.

Boosting comfort in your vehicle

If you don’t like taking long drives in your car, chances are the seats are not as comfortable as they could be. Luckily, there are various upgrades you can add to your seats to make them more comfortable and create a spa-like experience every time you drive. If your car didn’t come with a seat warming or cooling option, you can buy seat covers or cushions that can warm or cool your seats whenever you want. Some advanced cushions will also give you a massage, making you feel like you’re in a spa when, in reality, you’re stuck in traffic.

You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars more than you can afford to buy a new car with the latest tech. There are various aftermarket add-ons that you can buy for a few hundred dollars and turn an old cheap car into a vanguard of technology with the connectivity, convenience, and safety features found in newer, more expensive vehicles.
