A month back, Asus announced a few phones in the ZenFone 2 lineup. One of the most important one was Zenfone 2 Laser. It is an entry-level device which costs Rs. 10,000. It does everything which most of the devices in that category do. One thing which makes the device stand out is the camera. I’ll get to that in the last.
Let’s start with the design. It has a 5.5 inch 720p display and with curved back which makes holding the device a whole lot easier. It also has a rubbery finish on the back which give an extra grip. It sure feels a lot better than what you paid for. It comes in a whole lot of colours including Gold and a bold Red.

Coming to the specs, it has Qualcomm 64 bit Quad Code Snapdragon 410, Adreno 306 GPU, 16GB internal storage, 2BG RAM and also a 3,000 mAh Li-Polymer removable battery. It performs really well with moderate every day usage. The battery also lasts one full day on a single charge. Also, it has 4G support for all the Indian bands. The memory is expandable by upto 128GB.

The software part is still a problem for some. It runs Android Lollipop out of the box, but comes with it’s own launcher and a ton of Asus apps. Personally, some of the apps were actually useful for me. But it will be really hard for someone who is looking for the clean Android experience.

Camera

Camera is why this phone exists. There are many phones out there both from Asus and it’s competitors in this price range which perform equally well. But this phone really stands out when it comes to the camera. Both the front and the back cameras are really good. It comes with a 13MP rear camera with dual tone flash and a 5MP front camera.

The phone gets its name Laser because of the laser focus. The phone uses a laser to focus on the subject. This lets you take photos really fast and also better photos under low light conditions. With my testing, I found the focus part to be crazy fast!

The camera app on the phone also comes with an advanced mode which lets you change the manual settings like shutter speed and exposure time. The phone also shoots 1080p 30fps videos. The laser focus makes a lot of difference when it comes to videos too.

Verdict

Keep in mind, this is not a flagship phone. It comes near the category where Moto G and Xiaomi Mi 4i exists. In this segment, if you are looking for a phone with an amazing camera, this is the best option. At times, the quality of the photos shot on this device is as good as the flagship devices out there!
