Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro costs exactly ₹50,000 more in India than the regular MacBook Pro with the same chip, memory and storage. The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display starts at ₹3,49,900 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model. Orders opened on 28 October, and Apple says it will be available from 6 November. The premium buys a tandem OLED screen with Multi-Touch, a Dynamic Island and a lighter body. Storage can go up to 16TB on M5 Max models.

Apple sells the PROLED model alongside the existing MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display, not in place of it. Matching like for like (M5 Pro with 24GB and 1TB, M5 Max with 36GB and 2TB), the listed configurations cost ₹50,000 more. In the US it is $400.

16-inch, M5 Pro (18-core CPU, 20-core GPU)₹3,59,900₹4,09,900₹3,85,900
14-inch, M5 Max (32-core GPU)₹4,99,900₹5,49,900₹5,12,900
16-inch, M5 Max (32-core GPU)₹5,39,900₹5,89,900₹5,52,900

US starting prices are $2,899, $3,399, $4,499 and $4,799 for the same four PROLED models. Apple offers no PROLED version with the base M6 chip, so the 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro at ₹2,39,900 remains the cheapest way into the family. Our M6 MacBook Pro guide covers that model.

What the extra ₹50,000 buys

If you rarely reach for a laptop screen, the OLED panel and lower weight may matter more than touch.

The 16-inch model is 320g lighter than the regular MacBook Pro. That is a difference you may notice if you carry it daily. Battery life still depends on the chip and model, so compare the exact configuration before ordering.

The screen is aimed at people who grade video, edit photos or check HDR work. Adobe RGB coverage, up to 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness and up to 2,000 nits for SDR outdoors are useful if your work depends on colour and brightness. Apple also lists reference modes; its medical imaging presets are for research and education only. A nano-texture option is etched into the cover glass for bright rooms.

Ports stay the same as the current Pro machines: three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC slot, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack. M5 Pro models drive up to three external displays and M5 Max models up to four.

What touch actually does on macOS

Apple has not turned macOS into iPadOS. The laptop ships with macOS 27, and existing apps work with touch because macOS translates a tap into a click. Apple’s own apps are optimised for touch, and new gesture APIs let developers build proper touch interfaces.

Apple shows touch being used to swipe, pinch to zoom, drag slides, fill a window with a double tap and tile windows with a flick. Existing apps treat a tap as a click. The more interesting question is whether the apps you use every day add controls that feel good under a finger; that will take time to judge.

The Dynamic Island lives in the notch area and shows Live Activities, calls and music controls. Spotlight and Siri AI also move into it, but Spotlight only moves there when Siri AI is available and turned on.

Some third-party apps will need updates to make full use of touch. Apple names apps including Notion, Canva, Microsoft Office, Adobe Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve, but we would wait to see how their touch controls work in practice. Apple Creator Studio apps also gain touch features, including a Multi-Touch keyboard in Logic Pro and touch editing in Final Cut Pro.

The limits worth knowing before you pre-order

  • Apple Pencil is not listed. Apple presents this as a finger-touch display and does not list Apple Pencil compatibility in its specifications. If drawing with a stylus is your priority, check the iPad mini with OLED instead.
  • Still a laptop. Apple presents a conventional MacBook design, not a tablet or detachable.
  • No M6 option. PROLED is only offered with M5 Pro and M5 Max, which pushes the entry price to ₹3,49,900.
  • Charger depends on the model. The 14-inch 15-core M5 Pro ships with a 70W adapter, but Apple says the 14-inch needs a 96W or higher USB PD charger to fast charge. The other 14-inch models come with 96W, and the 16-inch models include a 140W adapter. Our USB-C charging explainer covers how USB PD wattage affects charging speed.

Who should buy the touchscreen MacBook Pro

Buy it if you work with colour or HDR and want a reference-grade screen you can carry, or if you were already spending ₹3.5 lakh or more on an M5 Pro and want the lighter body and the better display. For a photographer or video editor, touch is a bonus. The OLED panel and the lower weight are what justify the money.

Skip it if you mainly want touch for its own sake. If the current display meets your needs, ₹50,000 is a lot to spend mainly for touch. We have yet to see how many third-party apps make good use of it. Coders, students and office users are better served by the Liquid Retina XDR model or the M6 MacBook Pro. Local AI work, such as the setups in our guide to running AI models locally, depends on memory and GPU cores, not the screen.

For creative work that needs the new screen, the PROLED model is worth a look. For everyone else, I would wait for independent display tests and updates to the apps you actually use before paying the premium. We have not tested this MacBook yet.
