Apple’s iPhone Handoff lets a mobile number work across two iPhones, but it depends on carrier support. Apple’s launch information names T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany. Jio, Airtel and Vi are not on that list, and none has announced support in the material Apple currently links to.
An iOS update alone cannot enable the feature without carrier support.
What iPhone Handoff does
iPhone Handoff is designed to let you use one number across two supported iPhones and move the active use between them. It is different from Apple’s older Continuity Handoff, which lets you continue an activity such as a Safari page or Mail draft between Apple devices.
It could be useful if you keep a personal iPhone and a second work phone, or want to use the feature with a newer device such as the iPhone Duo. The carrier still has to support the service.
Does it work on Jio, Airtel or Vi?
Apple’s launch footnotes name T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany. They do not list Jio, Airtel or Vi. Until Apple or an Indian operator adds support, do not plan on using Handoff with an Indian line.
Apple has not published an India launch date for the feature. An iOS update alone will not enable it if your carrier is not supported.
What would you need if support arrives?
Apple’s setup guidance calls for two compatible iPhones, the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi during setup and a supported carrier plan. Check Apple’s current instructions before changing plans or buying a second phone, because operator requirements and fees can vary.
What can you use in India instead?

- Use the same messaging account on multiple devices: check the linked-device option in the app you use.
- Keep work and personal numbers separate: use separate SIM/eSIM lines until your carrier confirms a supported Handoff service.
