Apple has finally made a foldable iPhone, and thankfully, it has kept the idea fairly simple. The iPhone Duo is a regular iPhone when closed and a much bigger screen when opened. But at ₹2,99,900, the bigger question is whether that convenience is worth almost three lakh rupees.
On paper, the Duo is easily the most interesting iPhone Apple has announced in years. It changes how the phone can be used without making the basic idea difficult to understand. Here is what actually matters.
What exactly is the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch display on the outside. You can use it like any other iPhone for messages, calls, maps, music and quick photos. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch inner display that feels closer to a small tablet.
Apple says the inside screen is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display. Both screens support ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The clever part is that both displays use the same aspect ratio. Apps should resize naturally when you open the phone instead of looking like they have been awkwardly stretched onto a tablet.
The large screen is the real reason to buy it
I do not think people will buy the Duo simply because it folds. The useful part is having more room without carrying an iPad. Reading a long article, editing a photo, checking a document or watching a video should all feel better on the inner display.
Split View also lets you place two apps side by side. That sounds genuinely useful for comparing products, checking a calendar while replying to a message or keeping notes open during a call.
The hinge can hold the phone at different angles, so the Duo can prop itself up for a video call or photo. Apple Pencil USB-C support is coming later too. I am less convinced that many people will carry a Pencil for their phone, but it is a nice option to have.
The cameras are good, but not Pro-level complete
There is a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera on the back. The main sensor also provides a 2x optical-quality zoom. For most photos, that should be more than enough.
What is missing is a dedicated telephoto camera. That matters on a phone this expensive. If long-range zoom is important to you, an iPhone Pro still looks like the better choice.
The Duo does make photography more flexible. You can use the rear cameras for a selfie while checking the shot on the outer display, or show the person you are photographing a live preview. These are small ideas, but they make good use of the second screen.
Performance should not be a concern
The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, along with a vapor chamber to manage heat. I would expect it to handle gaming, editing and two-app multitasking without any trouble.
Apple has split the battery across both sides of the phone. It claims up to 24 hours of typical use, or up to 31 hours of video on the inner display. Those figures sound respectable, but real-world battery life will be one of the first things worth testing.
The size is the obvious compromise
When open, the Duo is only 5.2mm thick. That is impressive. When closed, it becomes 11.3mm thick and weighs 254 grams.
In other words, it will feel thick and heavy in a pocket. That may be acceptable if you regularly use the larger screen, but it is a real compromise if you mostly keep the phone folded.

So, who is this actually for?
The iPhone Duo makes sense for someone who already uses an iPhone and an iPad mini, but would rather carry one device. Frequent travellers, heavy readers and people who work across multiple apps will probably get the most from it.
For everyone else, the price is difficult to ignore. A standard iPhone will be lighter, cheaper and easier to live with. An iPhone Pro will also offer a more complete camera system.
My take
The iPhone Duo feels like a thoughtful first attempt rather than Apple folding a screen just to follow a trend. The consistent displays, flexible hinge and iOS multitasking all sound useful.
Still, almost three lakh rupees is a huge amount for any phone. The Duo is exciting, but it is clearly an early-adopter product. I want to see how the crease, battery and hinge hold up in everyday use before calling it the future of the iPhone.
