Micromax, which has been facing the heat in India from Xiaomi, Motorola and Asus has inked a deal with Cyanogen Inc for a new series of phones. Micromax has announced a new online-only brand the “Yu” series whose software will be powered by Cyanogen Inc much like the Oppo and OnePlus.

Micromax Yu series of phones are to be announced early December. The phones will have a services layer integrated deep into the system, as claimed by the company.

The “Yu” (you) branding somehow seems like a direct response to “MI” (me), which Xiaomi uses to identify their brand.

As we had covered on Techzei earlier, Micromax phones were merely rebranded chinese phones (Including their so called flagship devices) and kernel sources were never released nor were any official updates pushed out. I hope all this changes with this new series, given Cyanogen’s commitment to the community.

Is Cyanogen taking the U-turn?

The key thing to be noted here is the added “layer of services”, being huge fans of open source, our team has been active in the aftermarket development community from where CyanogenMod was born and thereafter Cyanogen Inc., CM was made for the sole purpose for getting rid of all 3rd party bloatware that makes android a horrible experience.

We hope we won’t reach a day where we will have to actually get rid of CyanogenMod because of bloat. Oh, the irony there!
