Gemini Free Plan Changes: What Auto Means in India

Google is changing how the free Gemini plan chooses a model. If Auto has appeared in your model picker, you can no longer select Flash or Pro yourself. The change matters most if you used to switch to Pro for coding, maths or long documents. For quick questions and everyday drafting, you may barely notice it.

Google says the free-account rollout started on October 9, but it may not have reached every account at once. AI Plus subscribers are on a separate schedule: each will receive an email explaining when the change applies to their account.

Gemini free plan changes: Auto replaces the model picker

Before the change, free users could pick Flash or Pro themselves from the model menu. The menu now offers Auto, which Google describes plainly: most prompts go to Flash-Lite, while prompts that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro. If you switch off smart model selection, every reply on a free account comes from Flash-Lite.

Google is also replacing the old Extended thinking option with three effort levels: Low, Medium and High. Higher effort gives a model more room to work through a task and produce a more thorough answer, but it also uses more of your limit.

PlanPrice in IndiaModels and access Google listsUsage limit
Free₹0AutoStandard
Google AI Plus₹399 a monthFlash-Lite and Flash in the access chart; India plan page lists Pro2x standard
Google AI Pro₹1,950 a monthFlash-Lite, Flash, Pro4x standard
Google AI UltraFrom ₹6,500 a monthFlash-Lite, Flash, Pro5x or 20x AI Pro

Prices are Google’s listed monthly rates for India. The limits are compute-based, so Google counts how complex your prompts are, which models and features you use and how long a chat runs. Your allowance refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly cap.

How Auto mode picks a model

Google has not explained how Auto decides a prompt needs Flash or Pro beyond saying it looks for tasks that need deeper reasoning. The practical change is control: if an answer to a difficult spreadsheet formula or a stubborn bug looks shallow, you can no longer choose Pro yourself on the free plan and ask again. Auto may route a prompt to Pro, but you cannot make that choice.

For a quick summary, an email rewrite or a weekend plan, Flash-Lite may be enough. The difference is less predictable on technical work, where you may have preferred to choose Pro after a weak answer.

If you stay on the free plan, a few habits help:

  • Keep smart model selection on. Turning it off locks every reply to Flash-Lite.
  • Split a long PDF or a large codebase into smaller chunks instead of assuming the free tier will handle it all at once.
  • Look for the effort setting on your account. Google says each available model can run at Low, Medium or High effort, with higher effort using more of your limit.

What the free plan still includes

The free plan still includes useful features beyond model choice. Google’s India plan page lists image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, limited Google Flow access and Gemini Notebook for free accounts, along with 15GB of Google storage. Gemini Live is also the camera and voice mode that powers Gemini Guided Vision.

The catch is capacity. Google says heavier features such as Deep Research may be unavailable to free users during periods of high demand, and that free limits may be reduced before paid ones if capacity gets tight.

What Google says about AI Plus and Pro

Google’s updated model-access chart lists Flash-Lite and Flash for AI Plus, while the India subscriptions page also says the plan includes access to Gemini 3.1 Pro. The pages do not explain whether that Pro access appears as a direct choice in the model picker or how much use it includes. Check what appears in your account before subscribing mainly to select Pro yourself.

AI Plus costs ₹399 a month and includes twice the free usage, 400GB of storage, 200 Google Flow credits and Gemini in Gmail. If those benefits matter more to you than choosing Pro manually, the plan may still make sense.

AI Pro costs ₹1,950 a month and gives you four times the free usage, 5TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. Google also lists Chrome auto browse among its benefits, although availability varies by country. The Gemini in Chrome rollout is separate from these model-access changes.

Students in India can still get AI Plus free

Google’s student offer gives eligible university students in India one year of AI Plus at no cost. Redeem it by December 31, 2026, add a valid payment method at sign-up, and cancel before renewal if you do not want to pay the standard monthly price after the free year. The offer includes higher usage limits and 400GB of storage; Google’s current model-access pages do not clearly explain what Pro access means for AI Plus.

Should you pay for Gemini now?

For most people, no. If Gemini is your quick-answer and drafting tool, Auto on the free plan is enough. The change mostly takes away control over which model replies, not the app’s everyday usefulness.

AI Pro is worth considering if you rely on Gemini for coding, long reports or detailed maths and want to select Pro yourself. At ₹1,950 a month, it is a big jump from AI Plus, so it makes more sense if you will also use the 5TB of storage or YouTube Premium Lite.
