Google’s Fitbit Edge goes on sale on 27 October for $179.99 in the US, and it is the tracker to look at if you want a real screen and GPS without wearing a full smartwatch. It sits between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5, with up to seven days of battery life, an ECG app and three months of Google Health Premium in the box. Google has not announced an India price or launch date yet.

Pre-orders opened on 12 October through the Google Store and retail partners. A Stephen Curry Special Edition costs $219.99.

Fitbit Edge price, colours and bands

There is one model at $179.99. It comes in four finishes, each paired with Google’s Active Band: Obsidian (matte black case), Fog (polished silver), Olive (satin pyrite) and Canyon (warm gold). Extra bands are sold separately. The options are Active Sport, Magnet and Metal Links, with a micro-adjustable Performance Loop marked as coming soon.

The Premium trial lasts three months. After that, Google Health Coach, the new Health Guardian reports and some deeper insights need a paid Google Health Premium subscription, so count that as an ongoing cost if those are the features you are buying it for.

Display, design and battery life

The Edge has a Hybrid OLED screen that Google says offers 46% more viewing area than its previous trackers, plus a physical side button for actions such as pausing a workout. The case is recycled aluminium and 11.5mm thick, and Google claims it is 45% lighter than an Apple Watch Series 12 case.

Battery life is rated at up to seven days with default settings. Google says a full charge takes about 90 minutes. Five minutes on the charger can provide up to a day of use, measured with a 30W adapter that is sold separately. Battery life will vary with the features you enable.

One welcome change: this is Google’s first repairable fitness tracker, with a modular internal design and a replaceable battery. Google rates it 5 ATM and IP68 for water resistance, but says that resistance can diminish with wear.

Health and fitness tracking

  • Workouts: more than 40 exercise modes you can start on the wrist, with real-time pace targets, heart rate zones and splits.
  • GPS and altimeter: built-in GPS that Google says is up to 40% more accurate than earlier Fitbit trackers, so you can leave the phone at home on runs.
  • Automatic tracking: recognises up to 100 activities, including strength training, swimming and racket sports.
  • Sensors: optical heart rate, ECG for heart rhythm checks, skin temperature, SpO2 and HRV for sleep and recovery scores.
  • Health Guardian: blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends and high or low heart rate alerts, rolling out to Fitbit Edge and Fitbit Air for Premium subscribers later in October.

Treat the Health Guardian features as early warnings, not medical readings. Google says the blood pressure and insulin resistance trends are not a prescreener for hypertension or diabetes, do not give real-time clinical readings, should not be used to adjust medication, and are not for use during pregnancy. You also need to meet monthly wear requirements before you get the report at the start of each month. The ECG app works only in select countries and is not meant for anyone under 22.

What Fitbit Edge does not do

The Edge runs a redesigned Fitbit OS, not Wear OS, so there is no app store in the smartwatch sense. You get Google Maps, media controls, timers, alarms, and call and message notifications. Google lists phone notifications and media controls, but does not advertise on-wrist calling or contactless payments for the Edge. Its Fitbit payment-device support list also does not include the Edge, so do not buy it expecting tap-to-pay.

It works with most phones on Android 11 or later and iPhones on iOS 16.4 or later, and needs a Google Account and the Google Health app.

If you want tracking with nothing to look at, our Fitbit Air India price guide covers the screenless band, which Google now sells in India. If you want calls, apps and payments, a full smartwatch such as the Apple Watch Series 12 is the better fit. Google’s own Pixel Watch 5 sits above both as its most advanced wearable. The Edge makes the most sense for runners and gym-goers who want GPS, pace and heart rate zones on the wrist and a week between charges.

Is Fitbit Edge coming to India?

Google has not announced it. Fitbit Air did reach India on 2 October at ₹13,999, so the Google Health lineup is being sold here and an Edge launch would not be a surprise. Do check which features would actually work in India before buying an imported unit, because Google says the ECG app is limited to select countries and Health Guardian availability varies by region. Until Google confirms India pricing, our list of smartwatches under ₹10,000 is the practical alternative if you want a screen and GPS on a budget.
