Android Platform Fragmentation – October 2013

Google updated its Android developer platform the latest statistics which show that Android 4.X powers more than 70% of the Android devices that visit the Google Play store. Currently,Android 4.1.X Jellybean is the popular version with 36.5% share and Gingerbread still remains the second most popular version with 28.5% which has dropped from 34.1% since that last update in July. Android 4.3 which was announced in July is now powering 1.5% of all Android devices.

Google announced that data is gathered from the new Google Play Store app , which supports Android 2.2 and above and hence the devices running the older versions like Donut and Eclair are not included. However , in August 2013 , devices that ran older versions than Android 2.2 accounted for about 1% of devices that checked in to google servers(not those that actually visited Google Play Store).
