Google’s guaranteed software support for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro ends this month. Both phones were promised five years of Android and security updates from their October 2021 US launch, making October 2026 the end of their guaranteed update window. Your phone will keep working, but future security fixes are no longer guaranteed, so it is time to plan what comes next.

Google has not formally said October is the final release, and it could still push an important fix later. But unless it extends support again, the regular support window for its first Tensor phones has ended. The Pixel 6a has until July 2027.

Why Pixel 6 updates end in October 2026

Google launched the Pixel 6 at $599 and the Pixel 6 Pro at $899 in October 2021, with three years of Android version upgrades and five years of security updates. In December 2024 it extended that to five years of both. Google’s Pixel help page now lists the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a and Pixel Fold as getting five years of OS and security updates, counted from the month each phone first went on sale on the US Google Store.

That clock does not change based on where you bought your phone. A Pixel bought in Europe or Asia follows the same US launch date.

What the October 2026 update includes

The October update runs on Android 17 and rolled out in phases over about a week. The Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6a get build CP3A.261005.002.A1, the same build as the Pixel 7 series, Pixel Tablet and the first Pixel Fold. The October Android security bulletin fixes 28 vulnerabilities, and Google’s Pixel bulletin lists six more Pixel-specific fixes, with a security patch level of 2026-10-05.

There are no fixes aimed specifically at the Pixel 6 or 7 this month. Install it anyway, because it may be the last regular security patch for these phones.

How to check if your Pixel has the latest update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Software updates > System update.
  3. Tap Check for update and install anything available. Keep the phone charged and on Wi-Fi.
  4. After the restart, check the security patch level on the same screen. If it reads 5 October 2026 (2026-10-05), you have the October update.

When support ends for other Pixel phones

Google counts five years for the Pixel 6 and 7 families and seven years for the Pixel 8 and later, starting from the US Google Store launch month. That gives these dates for the end of guaranteed updates:

The Pixel 5a and older models already get no Android or security updates.

Is it safe to keep using a Pixel 6 after updates end?

For a while, yes, with some care. Nothing switches off, and apps from the Play Store will keep updating for some time. The risk builds gradually: each month, new Android security flaws are fixed on supported phones but stay open on yours. That matters most if the phone handles banking apps, UPI, work email or two-factor codes.

  • Install the October update now so your phone has the latest fixes Google currently offers.
  • Keep apps updated and only install apps from the Play Store. Avoid sideloading APK files from links or chats.
  • Turn on scam protection, such as enhanced scam detection in Google Messages, and be wary of links in unexpected texts.
  • Back up now, before anything goes wrong. Our guide on how to back up your phone properly covers Google backups and local copies.
  • Move sensitive tasks such as banking to a supported phone once you have one, and use the Pixel 6 as a second phone or camera.

Should you upgrade?

If your Pixel 6 still has good battery life and you mainly use it for calls, chat and photos, you can stretch it a few more months while you pick a replacement. If the battery is worn out, you would be paying for a repair on a phone with no future updates, so upgrading is the better use of money.

For your next phone, check the remaining software-support window as carefully as the camera and battery. Google promises seven years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 8 and later, counted from each model’s US launch month. That puts the Pixel 8a’s guaranteed window through May 2031.

FAQ

Will my Pixel 6 stop working after October 2026?

No. It will keep working normally. It has reached the end of its guaranteed update window. Google has not ruled out further fixes, but you should not count on regular security patches.

Is the Pixel 6a also losing updates?

Not yet. The Pixel 6a first went on sale in July 2022, so its five years of guaranteed updates last until July 2027.

Has Google confirmed October is the last Pixel 6 update?

Not directly. Google’s support page sets the five-year window from the October 2021 launch, and that window ends with this month’s update. Google could still release a critical fix later.

How long will a Pixel 8 or newer get updates?

Seven years of OS and security updates from its US launch, so the Pixel 8 is covered until October 2030.
