Gemini Personal Intelligence in Android Auto: How It Works

Gemini in your car can now answer questions about your own life, not just the road. Google has started rolling out Gemini Personal Intelligence in Android Auto, which lets the assistant pull details from Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search when you ask for them. Ask “What’s my flight gate, and is my flight on time?” and Gemini can find the booking email and check the status in one reply.

It is opt-in, but there is a catch worth knowing before you start driving: if you have already turned on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone, Google says it comes with you into the car automatically. Cars with Google built-in get the feature “in the coming months.”

What Personal Intelligence changes in Android Auto

Gemini has been in Android Auto since last November. It could already place calls, send messages, find places, control music and retrieve some details from connected apps. Personal Intelligence goes further by using information across your connected Google apps to answer more personal, multi-step questions.

Google’s own examples show the kind of requests it has in mind:

  • Two questions at once: “What’s my flight gate? And is my flight on time?” uses the confirmation email and a live status check together.
  • Navigation from your calendar: “Take me to my doctor’s appointment” works without you remembering the street address.
  • Places from your photos: “Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there.”
  • Food that fits your habits: “Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe.” Google says a vegetarian would get a vegetarian-friendly shortlist without saying so each time.
  • Picking up a past chat: “Take me to the coffee shop we were talking about yesterday.”

The appointment example is particularly useful: you can ask for directions without opening a calendar invite and copying the address into Maps while driving.

Which Google apps Gemini can use in the car

For Android Auto, Google lists Google Workspace (including Gmail and Google Calendar), Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. You choose which of these are connected. Gemini’s help page adds a few conditions that decide how much it can actually see:

  • Keep Activity must be on, or Personal Intelligence does not work at all.
  • Web & App Activity must be on for answers based on your Search and Maps history.
  • YouTube History must be on for answers based on what you watch.
  • Smart features in other Google products must be on before Gemini can connect to Gmail, Calendar and Drive.
  • Google Photos works only in certain countries, and needs Face Groups (with your own face selected) and Estimate missing locations turned on in Photos.

That last point matters for the “car wash from last week’s photo” example. If location estimates are off in Photos, Gemini has less to go on.

Who gets it, and does it work in India?

Google says Personal Intelligence is rolling out to eligible personal Google accounts for users aged 18 and older “globally, excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria.” Work and school accounts on Google Workspace are not included. India is not on the excluded list, and Google launched Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app in India in April, starting with Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers and promising free users later.

You also need Gemini working in Android Auto in the first place:

RequirementWhat Google asks for
PhoneAndroid 11 or newer with at least 2GB of RAM
AssistantGemini set as your phone’s digital assistant
CarA vehicle that supports Android Auto
AccountA personal Google Account, 18 or older
RegionAnywhere Personal Intelligence is offered, which excludes the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria
Cars with Google built-inDue in the coming months; Gemini must be picked as the assistant in the car’s Google settings

Google is rolling this out gradually, so a phone that meets every requirement may still take a few days to get it. If you are on Gemini’s free plan, check whether the Personal Intelligence card appears in the Gemini app first. If it has not reached the app yet, the car is unlikely to have it either.

How to turn Personal Intelligence on, or keep it off

Google says you manage this from your Gemini settings on the phone, and Android Auto follows whatever you choose there.

  1. Open the Gemini app on your phone. If you are eligible, a Personal Intelligence card appears on the home screen. Tap Get started.
  2. Choose Connect all, or tap Choose apps to pick only the ones you want, such as Workspace and Search but not Photos.
  3. To change this later, tap the menu, then your profile picture, then Personal Intelligence and Connected Apps, and switch individual apps on or off.
  4. Connect your phone to the car and say “Hey Google” (Voice Match and “Hey Google” need to be on), tap the microphone on the car screen, or hold the voice button on the steering wheel.

If you want Gemini in the car but not your inbox, disconnect Google Workspace in Connected Apps. Navigation, music, calls and general questions keep working without Personal Intelligence; Google says the answers just won’t be tailored to you. Connected Apps is an account setting, so the same choice also shapes answers in other places Personal Intelligence works, such as Gemini in Chrome.

Things to know before you rely on it

Everyone in the car can hear it. Google’s help page notes that Gemini in Android Auto “is available to anyone in the vehicle.” Once Workspace is connected, an answer about your next appointment or a booking email is spoken out loud to whoever is sitting with you. If you often drive colleagues, clients or family, think about which apps you connect, or ask personal questions only when you are alone.

Check anything that matters. Google warns that Gemini in Android Auto “can hallucinate” and should not be relied on for critical or safety-related information while driving. Its India launch post also says Personal Intelligence is still in beta and can “over-personalize” by linking unrelated things. A gate number from Gemini is a good start; the airline’s own app or the airport screens are still the final word.

What Google says it does with your data. Google says Gemini does not train directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. It does train on prompts and responses after filtering personal details. In cars with Google built-in, personal answers are shared only when you are in the car with your phone connected.

The benefit is easy to see when you need an address or booking detail without touching your phone. Start with only the apps you are comfortable connecting, and remember that everyone in the car can hear a spoken answer.

FAQ

Is Gemini Personal Intelligence in Android Auto free?

Google’s Android Auto announcement does not mention a subscription. Availability depends on whether Personal Intelligence has reached your Google account. In India, it launched first for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, with free users promised later.

Do I have to turn it on separately for the car?

No. If Personal Intelligence is already on in the Gemini app, Google says it carries over to Android Auto. If it is off, Gemini in the car answers without personalization until you turn it on in the Gemini app.

Does it work with a work or school Google account?

No. Google says it is for personal Google accounts only, not Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts.

When does it reach cars with Google built-in?

Google only says “in the coming months.” Android Auto, which runs from your phone, gets it first.
