Spotify QR Code Verification: How the Family Plan Check Works

Spotify has started asking some Premium Family members to prove they live with the person who pays for the plan, and this time an address is not enough. With Spotify QR code verification, the plan manager shows a QR code on their phone and the member has to scan it in person. Miss the seven-day window and Spotify says the member cannot join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months.

If everyone on your Family plan lives together, the check should be straightforward. If members live in different cities, they cannot complete it as Spotify requires. That matters particularly in India, where new Family and Duo subscriptions are no longer available.

What Spotify QR code verification is

Spotify’s support page, including the India version, now says it “may ask some Premium Family members to verify they live with the plan manager by scanning a QR code.” The member gets a prompt in the app, and has seven days to complete the scan from the time the notification appears.

This sits on top of the address checks Spotify already runs. Members confirm their full address when they join, when the manager changes address, or when Spotify cannot confirm it. Spotify says it does not track location for its address checks. The separate QR check requires both phones to be in the same place.

How to complete the QR code check

The check only works in the Spotify mobile app, not on the desktop app or the web player. Before you start, update the app on both phones.

  1. Meet in person. The plan manager and the member need to be in the same place.
  2. On the plan manager’s phone, open Spotify, tap the profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage, and open the QR code.
  3. The member scans that code with their phone camera.
  4. Repeat for each member who got the prompt. Not everyone on the plan will be asked.

If the scan fails, Spotify suggests checking that both phones have the latest app version, making sure the date and time are correct on both devices, and closing and reopening the app. The code refreshes every few seconds, which is probably why the time setting matters, so switch both phones to automatic date and time before you try again.

What happens if you miss the seven-day window

Spotify’s support page lists two consequences for a member who misses the window or cannot complete the check:

  • They cannot join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
  • They can still pay for a different plan, such as an individual one.

Spotify says a failed address check moves a member to the free plan and allows them to rejoin the same Family or Duo plan. Its QR instructions do not explicitly say whether those same outcomes apply to a failed QR scan.

Your playlists and library belong to your own account, because every Family member has a separate login. Losing the plan takes away Premium features, not your saved music.

Why this matters more in India

Spotify replaced its India plans on 13 November 2025. Its India support pages now say Premium Family and Premium Duo are “only available for users that signed up” before that date. New subscribers cannot buy them. If a member fails the QR check, they cannot join a different existing Family or Duo plan for 12 months. They also cannot start a new Family subscription in India. Spotify does not say whether they can rejoin the same plan after a failed QR scan.

A parent paying for children who study or work in other cities may run into this restriction. Spotify has always required Family members to live at the same address; the in-person scan adds another way to check it.

Your options if you don’t live together

Spotify India’s Premium page currently lists these plans:

PlanPrice in IndiaAccountsWho it suits
Premium Student₹69 a month1 verified studentCollege students who were on a parent’s Family plan
Premium Standard₹139 a month, or ₹799 for a year prepaid1Anyone who lives away from the plan manager
Premium Platinum₹299 a monthUp to 3, same addressSmall households that want lossless audio and AI DJ
Prices from Spotify India’s Premium page on 20 October 2026, excluding first-time trial offers.

For a student in a hostel, the Student plan at ₹69 a month is the cleanest answer. For anyone else living away from the plan manager, the ₹799 prepaid year of Standard works out to about ₹67 a month and does not auto-renew.

Premium Platinum is not a way around the household rule. Spotify says it is “for up to 3 household members who live together” and asks for your address to confirm it. Spotify has only described QR checks for Family plans so far, but Platinum has the same requirement. If you do not need Platinum’s lossless audio or AI features, Standard costs less and streams at up to 320kbps.

Watch out for fake verification messages

Spotify says the QR scan takes place in its mobile app with the plan manager nearby. It may email members about a separate address check. If a message asks you to scan a code, pay a fee or enter login details, open Spotify directly and check for the prompt there instead of following the message link. On Android, scam detection in Google Messages can flag suspicious texts and links before you open them.

FAQ

Does every Spotify Family member have to scan a QR code?

No. Spotify says it may ask “some” Premium Family members. You only need to scan if you get the prompt in the app.

Can I do the Spotify QR scan on a video call?

No. Spotify says both people must be in the same place, and the code changes every few seconds.

Can I still buy a Spotify Family plan in India?

No. Spotify’s India support pages say Family and Duo are only available to people who signed up before 13 November 2025. Premium Platinum, with up to three accounts at the same address, is the current multi-account option.

Will I lose my playlists if I fail verification?

Your playlists remain attached to your own Spotify account. Spotify does not spell out the account-status change after a failed QR scan, so check your plan in the app if verification fails.
