If you are buying an iPhone 16 abroad for use in India, check the model number before comparing 5G bands. India and US units differ most in SIM setup and mmWave support. The US version adds mmWave, but it has no physical SIM tray. For most people using the phone in India, the locally sold model is the simpler choice.
Thailand is a little harder to compare because Apple’s Thailand specifications and its global cellular list do not show the same 5G bands for model A3287. I’ll point out where Apple’s own pages disagree, so you know what to verify before buying an import.
iPhone 16 model numbers by region
Apple identifies the US iPhone 16 as A3081 and the US iPhone 16 Plus as A3082. For other regions, the iPhone 16 is generally A3287 and the iPhone 16 Plus is A3290. Apple’s Thailand iPhone 16 page lists A3287. If you are buying a Thailand Plus, check the model number on the box or in Settings before paying.

Which iPhone 16 5G bands matter in India?
For everyday 5G in India, n78 is the key mid-band to look for. Jio also uses n28 at 700 MHz for a wider coverage layer. Network availability still depends on your operator, city and plan, so a supported band by itself cannot promise 5G service everywhere.
Apple’s India specifications list n28 and n78 for A3287 and A3290. Its global cellular page also lists those bands for A3287. However, Apple’s Thailand product page shows a shorter band list and does not include n78. That does not prove a Thailand iPhone lacks the band, but it does mean Apple’s published pages are inconsistent. If n78 support is essential, ask the seller to confirm the exact model and check the phone with your carrier before buying.
The US A3081 and A3082 support n28 and n78, as well as mmWave bands n258, n260 and n261. Those mmWave bands are useful in some high-capacity US locations. They are not a reason by themselves to import a US iPhone for normal use in India.
Why Apple’s band counts do not line up
There is no clean band-count answer across Apple’s pages. The India product specifications include n14, n29 and n71 for A3287 and A3290. Apple’s cellular matrix omits those three bands from its A3287 entry, while the US A3081 list includes them. Apple’s Thailand product page publishes a shorter list again.
Rather than present one count as definitive, compare the model number and the specific bands your carrier uses. The overlap that matters most for Indian 5G is n78, with n28 particularly relevant to Jio. Apple should make its regional tables clearer, but until then, avoid relying on a shop listing that only says “supports 5G.”
India vs Thailand vs US: which one should you buy?
India model: This is the easiest choice if you live in India. You get a physical SIM tray, eSIM support, local purchase documentation and the standard local service route. Apple’s India specifications list the bands used for Indian 5G.

US model: You get mmWave support, but you lose the physical SIM tray. If your Indian number is on a physical SIM, you will need to move it to eSIM and confirm that your operator supports the transfer. For most India-based buyers, the extra mmWave hardware is a poor trade for that inconvenience.
