Guided Learning in Google Classroom: New AI Controls for Schools

Guided Learning in Google Classroom is rolling out worldwide, giving teachers a way to assign an AI tutor grounded in their lesson materials. Google also plans to make Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search off by default for K-12 student accounts until a school administrator enables access. The Classroom rollout began on 3 November; Google has not announced a firm start date for the new defaults.

What Guided Learning is

Guided Learning is a Gemini mode built for studying. Instead of replying with a finished answer, it asks questions, breaks a problem into steps and nudges the student to work it out. Google describes the goal as “productive struggle”: challenging enough that students actively think, without being so hard that they give up.

The examples Google gives are everyday homework. A student stuck on a physics problem gets prompts that lead toward the method rather than the result. A student writing a book report gets help structuring their ideas rather than a written report.

Google says the Classroom version was shaped by teachers in a four-week pilot run with Ark across three UK secondary schools and four subjects. Teachers asked for two things: visibility into what students were doing, and focus. That led to educator insights and the ability to anchor a Guided Learning session in the curriculum a teacher uploads.

How teachers assign Guided Learning in Google Classroom

Teachers need admin-enabled Gemini app access to create an activity and review insights. Students need that access to use it. Google lets teachers create an activity even if student access is off, but students will need their administrator to enable it before taking part.

  1. Open classroom.google.com and go to your class.
  2. Open Classwork, click Create and choose Assignment.
  3. Under Attach, choose Guided Learning.
  4. Give the activity a name.
  5. Add source material with Select from class or Upload file. Google recommends one source and allows up to five.
  6. Click Create and preview to test the activity as a student would.
  7. Add instructions for students. Gemini doesn’t read these instructions, so put anything Gemini needs to know into the source material.
  8. Click Assign.

A few details that help in a real classroom:

  • It works with Class Tools, so a teacher can lock ChromeOS devices to the activity.
  • Class Copy duplicates Guided Learning activities into another class, so you don’t rebuild them for each section.
  • Deleting the post removes student access, but the conversations are kept.

If you’d rather build study material than a tutoring chat, Google’s help pages position Gemini Notebook’s study tools as the other option inside Classroom: Notebook works from a set of sources to produce study aids, while Guided Learning is a back-and-forth tutor.

What teachers can see, and what they can’t

Teachers can read chats from the Guided Learning activities they assign. They cannot see a student’s unrelated Gemini chats through the assignment view.

QuestionAnswer from Google’s help pages
Can teachers see Guided Learning chats?Yes, for the Guided Learning activities they assigned, as per-student transcripts
Can teachers see a student’s personal Gemini chats? No. Teachers only see assigned Guided Learning conversations
What else do teachers get?AI-generated insights: usage, class summaries and common themes
Can insights be used for grading?Google says insights are AI-generated and not meant for assessment; usage limits apply
What is needed for transcripts? The student’s Gemini activity setting must be on
If a student deletes a chat?It leaves the teacher’s view
Can the school still review it?Admins may be able to review it through Google Vault
Is the data used to train Google’s models?Google says Gemini in Classroom data isn’t reviewed by humans or used to train AI models

Students work in a focused view, and their Guided Learning history lives in the Classwork tab rather than in the Gemini side panel.

What school admins can set today

Until the new default arrives, the current controls apply. Gemini in Classroom is available with every Google Workspace for Education edition (Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus) and, per Google’s admin help, is on by default for users of all ages. To change it:

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console.
  2. Go to Menu > Generative AI > Gemini for Workspace > Feature access in Classroom.
  3. Pick the organisational unit or group, for example a student OU.
  4. Set it to On or Off and click Save.

Google says changes can take up to 24 hours to apply. Students only get the Gemini tab in Classroom if Gemini in Classroom is on and the Gemini app or Gemini Notebook is also enabled for them, which is why Guided Learning needs the Gemini app switched on.

Separate organisational units for teachers and students let an administrator apply different access settings. Check the school’s existing settings now, then review Google’s rollout notice before changing access for students.

What it means for schools and parents in India

Google Classroom and Workspace for Education are widely used in Indian schools and colleges, and Guided Learning in Classroom is a global launch, so Indian teachers can use it now if their admin has enabled the Gemini app.

Indian schools should check their own Workspace settings and rollout notices. Google has not provided a country-by-country timetable for the new default-off controls, so a US rollout estimate should not be treated as an India date.

Google’s Indian education push is running in parallel. In a separate 3 November post, Google said its AI Educator Series sessions in India in September trained 80,000 educators, and it is releasing self-paced modules for every educator in India. They are aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and available in English, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Assamese, Odia and Punjabi, with more Indian languages planned next year. Google says Indian teachers are already using Gemini and Gemini Notebook to turn lessons into comic strips, podcasts and infographics.

For parents, the useful checks are simple:

  • Ask the school which Google services are enabled on your child’s school account, and whether Gemini is among them.
  • Remember that school controls only apply to the school account. A personal Google account at home follows different rules, and our list of free AI chatbots and their limits in India shows how much is available without any school in the loop.
  • If your child is studying with AI at home, steer them to a study mode that asks questions rather than one that writes answers. Our roundup of free AI tools for students and writers covers the alternatives.

The research behind Guided Learning, and its limits

Google published two studies alongside the launch.

StudySetupResult reported by Google
University of Tokyo randomised trial300+ students, half a day learning statisticsScores rose 5.3 percentage points with standard tools and 8.1 points with Guided Learning, about 1.5 times the gain
Ark pilot in the UK4 weeks, 3 secondary schools, 4 subjectsQualitative: teachers wanted visibility and focus, which shaped the Classroom features

The Tokyo result covers half a day of statistics study. It is useful early evidence, but it does not establish that the same gains will last across a school year or apply to every age group and subject. The UK pilot mainly collected feedback on how the tool worked in class.

FAQ

Is Google turning off Gemini for students?

Google plans to make Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search off by default for K-12 student accounts. Schools will need to enable access. Google says it will share details before the changes roll out.

What is Guided Learning in Google Classroom?

A Gemini tutoring mode teachers can assign as an activity. It asks questions and breaks problems into steps instead of giving the answer, and it can be anchored to material the teacher uploads.

Is Guided Learning available in India?

Yes. Google says Guided Learning in Classroom is globally available from 3 November. Your school admin needs to have the Gemini app enabled for teachers and students.

Can teachers read my child’s Gemini chats?

Teachers can read transcripts of Guided Learning activities they assigned, if Gemini activity is on. They can’t see personal Gemini chats. Admins may be able to review deleted chats through Google Vault.

Does Google train its AI on student data from Classroom?

Google says Gemini in Classroom data isn’t reviewed by humans or used to train AI models.

When does Guided Learning come to Google Search for students?

A pilot starts in select US schools later in November 2026 and expands in the coming months. Google hasn’t announced dates for other countries.

Do these changes affect personal Google accounts?

No. They cover school-managed K-12 student accounts. A personal account follows Google’s normal age and parental control rules.
