How to Use ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude for Free in India: 2026 Limits Explained

Free AI chatbot India: Claude logo

ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all have free plans in India, but their limits work differently. ChatGPT is the simplest option for everyday text chat; Gemini uses a budget that refreshes over time and can also hit a weekly cap; Claude includes more document and coding tools, but longer sessions can use up its allowance quickly. None publishes one fixed message count that covers every feature.

All three limits were checked on the companies’ official help and pricing pages on 14 October 2026. They change often, so check the in-app usage screen if something stops working.

ChatGPT Free: best for unlimited everyday chat

OpenAI’s help centre says Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. The default model is GPT-5.6 Luna, and the Think option, on mobile now and rolling out on the web, uses Luna for harder questions. You also get web search, data analysis, file and image uploads, image creation and a 500MB Library.

ChatGPT places separate caps on file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis, and shows when each one resets. GPT-6 and the Medium, High and Extra High thinking levels are paid features. Ads may appear on the Free tier in some countries. Our ChatGPT Intelligent UI article explains how interactive elements appear in replies.

Gemini free: best if you live in Google apps

Google’s Gemini help page describes “standard limits” for users without a plan. Rather than a message count, each prompt uses part of a compute budget based on the model, features and chat length. The budget refreshes every five hours until you hit a weekly limit. The free context window is 32k tokens, which is enough for a long article but not a large PDF. Google AI Plus doubles the limits and raises the context to 128k tokens; AI Pro gets four times the limits and 1 million tokens.

Google recommends starting a new chat when you switch topics because long conversations use more of the budget. You can check Settings > Usage Limits on gemini.google.com to see what remains. Deep Research availability may also be limited for free users at busy times. Gemini is also replacing Gems with Skills; our Gemini Gems to Skills piece explains what changes.

Claude Free: best tools, tightest limits

Anthropic’s pricing page lists a lot for $0: chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, code execution and file creation, memory, connectors, Artifacts, skills, up to five projects, and Claude Docs, Slides and Design, which we covered in Claude Docs, Slides and Design are now free. Free users get Sonnet and Haiku, not Opus.

The limit is a rolling five-hour session window with no fixed message count. Long conversations, big file uploads and code execution burn through it quickly, so Claude Free suits a few focused sessions a day rather than all-day use. Claude Code and Research are paid features.

Which free AI should you use?

  • Students and everyday questions: ChatGPT Free, because plain chat is effectively unlimited.
  • Gmail, Docs and Android users: Gemini, for how well it fits into Google’s apps.
  • Writing, documents and code: Claude Free, for its tools, as long as you can live with the session limit.
  • Private or offline use: none of the above. A local model on your own laptop costs nothing per message; our guide on running AI models locally with Ollama shows how.

You can also switch between the free plans instead of paying as soon as one reaches its limit. If you repeatedly run into the same cap and the tool saves you time, then compare the paid plan against how often you use it.
